Decorative Flowering, Dwarf, Weeping Trees And Shrubs Plants

Shrubs have woody stems starting from ground level. Trees have central trunk and branches.

Deciduous trees and shrubs lose their leaves in autumn, usually after a colour change.

Evergreen trees and shrubs lose some leaves throughout the year, but keep most of them summer and winter.

Deciduous trees and shrubs must be planted in the winter when they are dormant. Evergreens should be planted in April when the soil has started to warm up.

Newly planted evergreens must be kept well watered. Spray the leaves frequently too.

Stake young trees until the roots are well established otherwise they will never get a hold.

Forest trees are not a good choice for gardens, their wide ranging roots can do expensive damage to drains and house foundations.

Check the eventual height and spread of trees and shrubs before you buy.

Protect young trees and shrubs from frost and cold winds to give them a flying start.

If your tree branches spread over your, neighbour's fence or wall, he is entitled to cut them off at the boundary. If your tree roots damages his property, he can sue.

Always check your soil type before deciding on installing expensive trees and shrubs in the garden.

Azaleas, camellias and rhododrons hate lime and will not grow in a chalky soil.

Alder, hornbeam and willow are best for damp soils.

Berberis, hebe and mahonia prefer dry conditions.

Snowberries, pyracantha and hebes are useful for seaside gardens as they tolerate salt.

Consider shrubs with variegated foliage, such as some kinds of holly and dogwood.

For sweet scent, plant flowering shrubs like mock orange (philadelphus) or lilac (syringe) with viburnum fragrans for winter perfume.

Myrtle, bay, eucalyptus, and rosemary all have aromatic leaves too.

Flowering cherries, Japanese maples, deciduous azaleas and flowering dogwood all give wonderful displays when their leaves change colour in the autumn.
