Hummingbird Feeder Recipe

You can use a saucer or bottle style hummingbird feeders for your birdfood. Feeding hummingbirds will become a great joy for your kids. Making the hummingbird feeder recipe is only one of many activities to build self esteem in children and will also get your kids excited about birds!

Recipe For Hummingbird Food

Materials Needed

Large pot

Measuring cups (dollar store)

Gallon milk jug

Large mouth kitchen funnel (dollar store)

Wooden spoon (dollar store)

Water

White sugar

Permanent marker

Humming bird feeder (discount store, home improvement center)

Step by Step Instructions

Thoroughly clean milk jug with dish soap and water. Rinse and let it air dry.

Measure 4 and 1/2 cups of water to a large soup pot and bring to boil. Boil the water for 5 minutes.

Add 1 cup of white cane sugar and stir with wooden spoon. Continue to boil and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Allow mixture to cool.

Using permanent marker, write "hummingbird nectar" on outside of milk jug.

Using a large mouth kitchen funnel, pour nectar into the clean milk jug.

Pour mixture into a clean hummingbird feeder.

Tips and Tricks

If you are working with very small children, complete steps one through four prior to bringing in the youngest children. Older children will enjoy stirring in the sugar and being involved during the whole process.

You can store the hummingbird nectar in the milk jug in the refrigerator up to two weeks.

Place your hummingbird feeder in a shaded area in order to preserve the nectar.

Change the hummingbird nectar at least once per week, earlier if the nectar becomes cloudy.

Do not add red dye to your nectar, it is harmful to the hummingbirds. The red on the bird feeder will be enough to attract the birds in winter.

You can further involve the youngest of children by allowing them to decorate the milk jug with permanent markers. Just be sure that 1) this is a supervised activity so nothing you care about is ruined, 2) an outside activity and 3) they are wearing clothing that can be marked on. I keep painting shirts just for this type of purpose. The hummingbird feeder recipe activity will give them ownership and build a love of hummingbirds to last a lifetime!
