Step by Step Instructions

Place the dried gourd in a bucket or sink of soapy water and let it set for 10-15 minutes. Then use a scouring pad to scrub the gourd clean.

Once the gourd has dried, sand away any rough spots on the outside of the gourd.

If you have a child standing with you, have them wear a pair of goggles as well for the drilling steps.

Drill 4 small holes at the top of the gourd, two for ventilation and two for a hanger.

Drill 4 small holes at the bottom of the gourd for drainage.

Draw a small circle at the widest point of the gourd for the opening. An opening of 1 and 1/2 inches will suffice for small birds like wrens.

Drill 7-9 small holes around the circle entry point.

Use a small saw to finish cutting the entry point of the bird house.

Once the entry hole is cut, sand away any rough spots on the opening.

Tip the gourd over and shake out the contents.

Use a pair of wire cutters and cut approximately 8-10 inches from the long, straight part of the hanger.

Thread the wire through two of the holes at the top of the gourd. Bring them to the top and twist. Instant hanger!

Place a few layers of newspaper on the work area. Better yet, choose a nice day and paint outdoors!

Paint the gourd with acrylic paints and allow to dry overnight.

Apply 3-4 coats of all weather varnish, drying in-between each coat and then allow to dry overnight.

Find a great tree and help your child hang the gourd birdhouse.
