Learn How You And Your Kids Can Build Birdhouse By Plan
The cheap way - let the birds show you how to build bird houses!
If you have trees in your yard, provide the birds with some materials to build nests. Place a basket in the yard (maybe even an empty suet basket) with the following bird house building materials:
Cotton batting
Leaves
Dried grass
Short pieces of twine, string or yarn (not fishing line)
Short sticks
Scrap material cut into strips (5 inches or so)
Hair (human hair, or hair from grooming your pet!)
Wool
Put your basket high where birds can access the items you've provided, possibly hang it on a fence post.
The do-it-yourself way - get direction for building a birdhouse!

Building Tips
Wood is the best building material. Be careful not to use pressure treated wood as it contains poisons that are harmful to the birds. Do not use metal or tin cans as the metal will get very hot and could harm or kill the baby birds.
Build your bird house roof with a two inch overhang to stop the driving rains.
Drill five 1/4 inch drain holes in the bottom of your bird house. Also, drill three 1/2 inch holes toward the top of the house for ventilation and air circulation.
Build a roof with a hinge for easy cleaning. Be sure to use a rust proof hinge as your creation will be outdoors all the time!
Place the entrance hole near the top of the box and make sure it is proportional to the size of the bird which you want to use the house. When deciding a location, remember the entrance hole should not face prevailing winds.
Bird houses and bird baths should be placed at locations inaccessible to predators, such as the neighborhood tom cat!
If you are going to paint your box, consider using natural, subdued color tones.
